Goals of the meeting were to:

  • Discuss ongoing topics, applications and problems related to design of experiments.
  • Learn the theoretical aspects of design of experiments through the applications, successes, and problems reported by experts and advanced users. They provided real-life examples through case study presentations to help others with their own implementation of DoE.
  • Offer an opportunity for experts and users to come together. Provide an atmosphere where productive discussions are possible and the opportunity is available to get the right statistical answers to your serious problems.
  • Meet the people behind Design-Expert software in person. Learn about special features and new developments in the software. Provide suggestions for future versions of Design-Expert software.
  • Meet interesting people to keep in touch with for future collaboration, cooperation and alliance.
  • Last but not least, have an enjoyable and beneficial meeting.

Abstract

An Introduction to Statistical Tools for Achieving Process Breakthrough & Optimization via Design of Experiments (from ground up through factorials to Response Surface Methods)

This presentation, based on the popular two-part book series by Mark Anderson and Pat Whitcomb, * provides a fast-paced overview of statistical tools for screening and optimization of process factors and product ingredients. The content will be kept as light as possible, with many fun, but informative, case studies such as

  • Making tastier microwave popcorn with maximum yield
  • Starting a reluctant weed whacker in the fewest pulls
  • Finding an optimal formulation for jelly beans.

Participants will learn how these multifactor methods can quickly lead to sweet spots—ideal settings for process factors and/or recipes for mixture components. Graduates will be revved up to put these powerful tools to work for their research and development.

Abstract

Combining Mixture and Process Variables

In this advanced workshop learn state-of-the-art tools for design and analysis of experiments on mixtures, and how to incorporate process variables. In the end you will know how to mix your cake, bake it, and ice it too using optimal designs.

Ingredients for Efficient Experimentation
See the outline below for a list of topics you'll be introduced to in the Combining Mixture and Process Variables workshop:

  • Brief review of mixture design and multiple response optimization
  • Set up optimal designs that combine mixture components and process factors
  • Learn how to deal with both mixture composition and the amount applied
  • Contend with categoric variables, such as material type
  • Combine one mixture with another (frosting on the cake)
  • Map mixtures to process space via ratios, thus enabling application of factorials and response surface methods (RSM)
